Fat Friday. It really is a thing!

Fat Friday! Yes its a thing. Unfortunately.

So on the weekend I saw a client who introduced me to the concept of “Fat Friday’

Whats fat Friday I hear you ask?  I asked the same question.

I was intrigued.

The client explained that every Friday it was common place, almost expected that you throw caution to the wind and indulge in an end of work week food free for all; a carby,sugary, boozy reward to a hard work week coming to an end.

Better still, if you didn’t take part in the calorie fest, and opted for a healthy salad from home you were almost ostracised and it was frowned upon.

I was blown away at this level of skewed thinking! Over 62% of Australian adults are now obese, and instead of a collective strive to health and healthy eating instead this level of covert peer pressure.

Its almost like if you don’t join in you can’t be in with the cool kids and you’re branded a spoiler.

This had me thinking all weekend, and especially at this time of year, when its all about festive food, and wine and the expectation that you will gain holiday kilos.

Food Addiction

Why do people just expect to get fat? Why is it accepted that cakes, and booze, and lollies are the norm.

You do get a choice, you can say no. So what if it’s the Christmas party? So what if its Christmas day or New Years, or the kids end of year concert, or recital – there is no reason to stop being mindful of what you are eating and what you are drinking and the portions and the amounts, and eat and drink things that YOU KNOW are going to make you feel crap physically and mentally.

Surround yourself with the right people, make smart friend choices as well as smart food choices. Friends are so influential in our lives and this can be both a good thing as well as a bad thing depending on the type of friends you’ve got.

According to research from the New England Journal of Medicine, when a friend becomes obese, it ups your chance of obesity by up to 57 percent.

So instead of seeking out fat Friday lunch buddies or Christmas party cohorts, how about you balance it out with lunchtime walking companions and Christmas party moderates.

Don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad for choosing to be healthy and look after yourself, at the end of the day your health really is your wealth.
